In the middle of studying for the two finals that I have today, I received a phone call from my grandma. She is a huge supporter and fan of my blog. She insisted that I come take a picture of the lunch our neighbor prepared for her annual holiday luncheon where each person is encouraged to bring a gift for loaves and fishes. Since it was just a block down the road, I couldn’t say no. When I entered, I planned on just taking a few pictures of the chicken enchiladas, drop off the gift my grandma forgot and then hurry home and get back to studying. Instead, like always I stayed a little longer than I planned. Avoiding studying I stayed for the scrumptious chicken enchiladas and homemade ice cream pie that Jan had prepared.
As the luncheon came to an end Jan (my neighbor and grandma’s friend) pulled out mini pajamas and sweat pants that she had made (pictured below). Not only is she an amazing cook but an incredible seamstress (I can barely sew on a button), she hand made each outfit with extra fabric that had been laying around the house. She shared with the neighborhood gals, that her son Steve who is a RN is going to India in January to assist doctors and surgeons while they operate on children with cleft lips.
Many of you may have seen advertisements of these children either on TV or in magazines. Many of these kids are ostracized, because of this malnutrition birth defect. Â Jan has decided to make as many sweat outfits/pajamas as she can before her son leaves in January. For every child that Steve and his crew operate on, he plans to give the little child/patient an outfit that Jan (his mom) has hand made.
I was touched by their generosity of spirit toward the less fortunate. Because fabric can be costly, I told her that I would do as much as I can to help gather fabric for her cause. The fabric used for the clothing is especially soft (cotton interlock or flannel). It takes roughly 2 yards to make a top and bottom, which she can whip out in 15 minutes (amazing) !! Her goal is to complete 60 outfits by January 1st to be able to send with her son Steve to India.
Any donations of FABRIC REMNANTS that you may not have use for, would be greatly appreciated to help Jan complete her goal. Â The fabric that works best is Cotton Interlock or Flannel. Your FABRIC donations can be mailed to:
Once your donations are received I will personally deliver them to Jan’s home. Jan’s collection of pajamas for the children in India will be posted on my blog as well as my facebook at a later date ! Stay tuned for more…
